SOLITUDE
While the world is fraught
with madness,
my days are gentle,
held together by
something tender.
The sun, now rising earlier
greets me with the promise
of a warm day.
Peas planted late
are flowering the same time
as tomatoes.
My cat, no longer
sharing my bed
looks upon me
from somewhere else.
Time moves on.
My body softens.
As the country opens up
I choose to retreat.
Politics leads over caution,
same mistake over and over.
People in the park
no longer wear masks.
I don’t go there now.
I wait and go inward,
finding music
in the bird’s song
and peace in my version
of Rilke’s solitude.
