MY SECRET SONG

It was during my evening walk—
the fast one I take alone.
It was as if I walked into it,
as in another dimension.
I walked into a song.

 A few steps back
it wasn’t there,
if I walked backwards,
it would be gone.

 But there it was
clear as day—
a tune already developed.
I sang it over and over
as if I might lose it like a dream
if I did’t write it down.

I hummed it into my phone.

When I got home
I played it on the piano.
I asked my husband
if he ever heard it before.
Maybe it’s a song I’ve always known.
Maybe everyone knows it.
But no, it was new to him.

 I’ve heard of songs
being given to people,
that they “snatch” them out of the air,
but that’s to famous people
who write songs for a living.
This is just me, who tinkers on the piano.

 I believe them now.
A song can come out of nowhere.

I am learning to use this song as a gift.
It calms me down. I feel
connected to the world
beyond what I can see.
Now, I can hear it. Feel it.

I don’t want to share it yet.
I’m not ready to give it away.
I want to baby it, coddle it, evolve it.
Let it do the job it came here to do.
This is mine for a while.
My secret song.
